A fire that swept through a two-story Sherman Oaks shopping center early Monday caused an estimated $1 million dollars in damage, the Los Angeles Fire Department reported. The fire broke out


at 2:35 a.m. in Sherman Oaks Square shopping center in the 4400 block of Van Nuys Boulevard, department spokesman Jim Williamson said. No businesses were open and there were no injuries.


The cause of the blaze was under investigation late Monday, Williamson said. The shopping center contains two buildings with 30 shops and offices. Williamson said the fire was contained in


one of the buildings but heavily damaged several small businesses, including Sundeck Tanning Center, Angelo’s Hair Design, Fanfare, Insurance by Design, Discovery Shop and Mailboxes of


California. About 115 firefighters were called to the scene and extinguished the blaze in about an hour. Structural damage was estimated at $750,000 and content loss at $249,000. Businesses


in the shopping center’s second building were open Monday. MORE TO READ
