Our society has made the “Drug War” the No. 1 issue. The government, the schools, the churches, businesses all seem to concur. We now have a “Drug Czar.” I think The Times should lead the
way among the nation’s newspapers in giving the drug issue the attention it deserves. I have some recommendations for you: 1. The paper should have a daily “Drug Page” for all drug-related
articles. 2. The paper should publish a running log of all drug cases from arrest to conviction showing date of arrest, arresting agency, prosecuting agency and current status. 3. The page
should publish a summary of the cases that have been resolved, showing number of convictions, number of acquittals. As citizens we are being asked to spend a fortune for police, prosecutors,
judges, jailers, clerks, courts, prisons to fight a drug war. We deserve to know whether it’s worth it, whether we’re winning or losing or being conned. Personally, I think drugs should be
legalized. But I know I’m in the minority. The recommendations I’ve made would help all of us re-evaluate our own positions. BOB BROOKS San Diego MORE TO READ
