Emmerdale fans were left delighted on Wednesday night as Robert Sugden made an incredible comeback after six years. During the latest instalment, Robert, played by Ryan Hawley, made a
dramatic return during his ex-husband Aaron Dingle's wedding to John Sugden, who happens to be his long-lost half-brother. Just before Aaron and John were about to say their vows,
Robert burst through the doors and declared: "Hello Aaron, miss me?" with the episode ending on a cliffhanger. Longtime soap watchers were left delighted over Robert's return
but for new viewers, here's a recap... WHO IS ROBERT SUGDEN? Robert is the son of Jack Sugden and Pat Sugden. However, tragedy struck when Robert's mother Pat died when he was just
a baby and he was later adopted by Jack's second wife Sarah Sugden. The character is related to Jackie Merrick, who tragically died, Tommy Merrick, Sandie Merrick, John, Victoria
Sugden and adopted brother Andy Sugden. Robert has been played by four different actors over the years with Richard Smith taking on the role from 1986-1989, Christopher Smith playing the
character from 1989-2001, Karl Davies portraying Robert from 2001-2009 and Ryan taking over the role from 2014-2019. Ryan has reprised the role for Robert's current return. Robert has
been married twice, once to Chrissie White in 2015 and again to love of his life Aaron in 2018. However, while Aaron was in prison, Robert had a drunken one night stand with Chrissie's
half-sister Rebecca which resulted in the pregnancy and birth of his son Sebastian. It was recently revealed that Rebecca had tragically died with it unknown whether Robert has custody of
his son or if Sebastian will also make an appearance on the soap. WHY DID HE LEAVE EMMERDALE? Robert left the ITV soap back in 2019 after being sent to prison over the death of Lee Posner.
Robert accidentally caused Lee's death after he attacked him, following Lee horrifically raping his sister Victoria. Robert faced up to his crime and cut all ties with the village and
his loved ones as he was sentenced. However, soap watchers had long hoped he may return, especially after hints that Robert may not have caused his death. Lee obtained injuries to his head
when he was punched, but it emerged Lee had also been hit by his brother Luke and that might have led to his death. WHAT IS KNOWN ABOUT HIS RETURN? Not much is known about his return so far,
especially as Robert was believed to be in prison, but actor Ryan has teased: "Well Ryan is back, but Robert is still technically in prison so we shall have to wait and see how that
works out!" He added: "It sets up a fantastic few episodes to finish off the wedding week which shows how the incident of Robert turning up will resolve itself." Ryan teased
further: "There's alot to unpick and so much to be revealed over the next few nights. It's a great few episodes and I’m really excited to see them." EMMERDALE AIRS
WEEKNIGHTS ON ITV AND ITV X AT 7.30PM WITH AN HOUR-LONG EPISODE ON THURSDAYS AND IS AVAILABLE TO STREAM FROM 7AM ON ITV X.
