Leicester's annual Eid ul Adha festival is returning this weekend. The three-day festival will see a host of celebrations and activities set up in Victoria Park.

Leicester Community Assist have organised the event, which will start this Friday (June 6) and end on Sunday (June 8). Preparations for the festival have already begun, with fun fair rides

being set up by the organisers in the park.

According to the community assist team, fairground rides, inflatable attractions, food stalls, games and sports are all scheduled to take place over the three-day festival. The organisers

said: "This year’s Eid-ul-Adha festival, celebrating the completion of Hajj (Pilgrimage), returns to Victoria Park for its 11th year. Entry is free, with optional donations, and everyone is

warmly invited to join the festivities."

The festival is set to start with the Eid Prayer followed by the Eid Speech and then celebrations take place for the rest of the day, according to the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad. Live

vocal Islamic Nasheed will also take place on each day.

What is Hajj (Pilgrimage)?

The annual pilgrimage, which Muslims are expected to complete at least once in their lifetime, sees worshippers fly to the holy city of Mecca, in Saudi Arabia, for five or six days of

religious rites. It involves a series of rituals that test the spiritual and physical endurance of the pilgrims.

The Hajj takes place over those five or six days and people celebrate the second set of main Eid celebrations that occur throughout the year. In 2024, the Hajj was attended by 1.8 million

people, according to Saudi Arabia’s General Authority for Statistics.

This year, the Hajj is expected to be from Wednesday, June 4, to Monday, June 9. A moonsighting near the end of May confirmed the exact date, setting the start of Dhul Hijjah and allowing

all the special events within that month, such as the pilgrimage and Eid ul Adha, to be worked out.

Leicester Community Assist said its three day festival has been sponsored by Leicester City Council. It will run from 9am-8pm on Friday (June 6) and between 12pm-7pm on Saturday and Sunday

(June 7 and June 8).
