I'd been walking down Belgrave Gate on my way to the scene of a car crash when I spotted the Good Thai Restaurant in Leicester city centre. I love Thai food and was happy to find
somewhere new to review, plus I also liked the name. In this modern world of self-promotion and exaggeration, there's something sweet about that level of humility. Not "Great Thai
Restaurant" or "The Best Thai Restaurant". They were only claiming to be good. But were they right? There was only one way to find out. The next day I was asked by the editor
to find somewhere to review, so as lunchtime approached, I went on Deliveroo and got ordering. READ MORE: I TRY A DIRTY LOUISIANA BURGER FROM LEICESTER'S KFC AND GET VERY FILTHY
Unfortunately, just as I was about to hit the Pay button news broke of a stabbing so I had to head out to take pictures and interview local residents. By the time I got back I was really,
really hungry. The Deliveroo rider arrived and handed over a white plastic bag. It was covered on the inside with drips of brown sauce and the can of mango juice had a dent in it. Either
they weren't packing it up very carefully or the cyclist went over a pothole. It was a bit of a mess inside - not good. I was hungry enough not to care and I got stuck in, starting with
the £7.50 serving of prawn toast. I've never had prawn toast so fat - it was full of mushed up prawns and utterly delicious. I'd also ordered a £1 pot of peanut sauce and the bits
of toast were even better after a dunking. They were crunchy, tasty and filling, so after having one I left the other three and moved on to the steamed vegetable dumplings. The dumplings,
which were £6, were stuffed with peas and sweetcorn and had a lot of soy flavour. It was a lot of umami and, while not as impressive as the prawn toast, they were good. The chicken wings,
for £7.50 were next and they were more than good. Coated in thick, sticky sweet chili sauce, they were loaded with meat and very, very hard to stop eating. For the main course I ordered a
panang chicken curry for £9.95 which came with rice. I'd also ordered a separate serving of sticky rice, which I bundled out onto the plate, leaving the boring old jasmine rice in the
fridge for my supper. The curry sauce had the consistency of tap water, which made me fear there might not be much flavour to it. And the bits of chicken that had sunk to the bottom of the
box, along with some beans and pepper chunks, didn't look like anything special. But the combination of the rice and the sauce was perfect. Despite its thinness, the sauce not only
packed in a lot of aromatic flavour, it also had a bit of a kick to it. The whole massive meal, plus Deliveroo fees, came to £41.93. Thai food is never cheap but it's always good. And
food at the Good Thai Restaurant is great. _OUR RATING: 5/5_ _OFFICIAL FOOD HYGIENE RATING: 4/5_ _GOOD THAI RESTAURANT DID NOT KNOW WE WOULD BE DOING A REVIEW AND WE PAID FOR OUR FOOD._ WE
