Liverpool have completed the signing of Jeremie Frimpong on a five-year contract from Bayer Leverkusen after triggering the right-back's £29.5m release clause. The Netherlands
international was left on the bench of Leverkusen's 2-2 draw with Mainz in the final game of the Bundesliga term on May 18, as the Reds closed in before undergoing the first part of his
medical the following day. And Liverpool have now confirmed Frimpong has completed all the formalities of his switch from Leverkusen, signing a deal which is understood to run until the
summer of 2030. The release clause will be paid in three separate annual instalments and the transfer itself will formally go through when the window opens on Sunday June 1. Frimpong becomes
the first signing of the summer at Anfield and just the third since Arne Slot and Richard Hughes arrived at the club last year, following on from the £10m addition of Federico Chiesa last
August and the £29m move for Giorgi Mamardashvili, who will officially complete his switch from Valencia when the transfer window opens. Liverpool stepped up their efforts to recruit a
right-sided full-back after it became clear Trent Alexander-Arnold had plans to leave the club at the end of his contract and Netherlands international Frimpong joins shortly after Conor
Bradley was handed a new deal as a reward for his progress in the Reds' first-team over the past 18 months. It's believed Leverkusen were keen to have the future of their defender
resolved quickly as they plan for next season with Erik ten Hag as their new head coach after Xabi Alonso left to succeed Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid. Liverpool held talks with
Frimpong's Prolific Sports Group representatives and established early on that the 24-year-old would jump at the opportunity to join the Premier League champions. The existence of a
£29.5m release clause also made the negotiation a smoother process given Leverkusen were not in a position to demand a higher fee for an important first-team player and Frimpong will arrive
in time for the start of next season. The Dutchman moved to Leverkusen in the summer of 2021 from Celtic and has become a vital part of die Werkself's team, particularly last season
when he scored 14 goals alongside a dozen assists as Alonso's team won the Bundesliga without losing. The speedy Dutchman has been less prolific this term, scoring five goals and
registering six assists in 33 games, but he was left out of the team for the draw at Mainz in anticipation of his move to Merseyside. The £29.5m deal will likely be viewed as something of a
bargain for Liverpool given the age and quality of a Dutch international who was an important part of a Leverkusen squad that won a domestic double last season before losing the Europa
League final to Atalanta. This article contains affiliate links, we will receive a commission on any sales we generate from it. Learn more Liverpool Champions range The advancement on the
deal for comes after Bradley put pen to paper on a new, long-term contract at Anfield earlier this month. It's understood the Northern Ireland international's terms run until June
2029 and is a reward for the progress he has made at first-team level over the past 18 months or so. He becomes the fourth Netherlands international at Anfield as he gets set to link up with
Oranje colleagues Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch but also bolsters the club's 'homegrown' quota given he spent close to a decade at Manchester City from the
age of nine before moving to Celtic, where he caught the eye of Leverkusen chiefs. Frimpong's versatility and speed have been viewed as ideal, with Slot targeting both traits in the
summer transfer window. The Netherlands star is able to play in a number of positions across the right side and could even deputise for Mohamed Salah next season when the Egypt captain takes
part in the Africa Cup of Nations. Liverpool have watched Frimpong develop from afar for around 15 years after coming close to bringing him in as a junior, only for him to choose City,
where he remained before carving out his reputation in the senior game at Celtic between 2019 and 2021, prior to his move to Germany. Liverpool, meanwhile, remain in talks with Leverkusen
over a potential club-record deal for new Bundesliga player of the year Florian Wirtz. The Reds are confident of striking an agreement for the Germany international after the player's
representatives made it known Wirtz would be keen to join the Premier League champions over Manchester City and Bayern Munich, who were both previously interested. An offer of £109m has been
tabled for Leverkusen to mull over as Liverpool look to secure Wirtz as the most expensive player of all time on Merseyside.
