A furry is someone who has an interest in animals that have human characteristics. For example, they can walk on two legs and talk.

Image from: reason.com I was visited by some former students last week. They were all fired up. Apparently there is a group of students demanding a litter box in the middle school bathroom.

This group of students claim they are furries and identify as cats. They wear cat ears and tails. They meow and hiss at students. One even clawed another student because the student reminded

them of a dog. The “cat” left claw marks on his neck!

This seems ridiculous to me. Hats aren’t even allowed at school so why are cat ears and tails allowed? Some of the students even wear a full cat helmet! As a teacher, that would freak me

out. I don’t know what’s under that mask! For student safety, this should not be allowed.

This is very disruptive to the classroom environment. I can’t even imagine teaching a child who is meowing at me. When I’ve had students do that in the past, I’ve giggled with them and then

reminded them to talk like an adult. Mind you, those kids were doing it to be funny- not because they identified as a cat.

This seems so childish to me. Everyday is Halloween to these students and they are playing dress up in an imaginary game.

The school district released a statement denying this is happening. They claim it is an urban myth. But; I have seen the pictures and videos of this actually happening! So, why is the school

denying it?

Do you have furries at your school? If so, do they get their own litter box? Let me know in the comments below.
