If and when they decompensate, these doctrines become an integral part of their delusions and are acted out violently. I personally believe that Laney was treated with more consideration than Yates because shes White (Yates is Hispanic) and unlike Yates, does not suffer from schizo-affective disorder, so she was able to cry and show remorse. The jury could not dehumanize her and so they chose to extend her more compassion.
