DONALD TRUMP HAS BEEN BRANDED 'DESPERATE' FOR A NOBEL PEACE PRIZE AFTER ISSUING A SURPRISING STATEMENT ON RUSSIA'S INVASION OF UKRAINE, FOLLOWING A PHONE CALL WITH VLADIMIR
PUTIN 13:59, 20 May 2025 Critics have labelled President Donald Trump "desperate" for a Nobel Peace Prize after he shared an unexpected opinion on Russia. Trump stated that he and
Russian president Vladimir Putin had a "two hour" conversation about the conflict in Ukraine. Following the call, Trump announced that the two nations would "immediately start
negotiations toward a ceasefire". The invasion of Ukraine by Russia, which commenced on 24 February 2022, might see an end if Trump's recent statements are true. However, some
political analysts suggest that Trump's involvement in the war is driven not by a quest for peace but by award-winning desires. Trump has made it clear that he will play a minimal role
in the peace discussions, leaving the matter to Ukraine and Russia. He took to his social media site, Truth Social, and wrote: "The conditions for that will be negotiated between the
two parties, as it can only be, because they know details of a negotiation that nobody else would be aware of." He also suggested that post-peace talks, Russia would be keen on engaging
in trade with the United States. He remarked: "Russia wants to do large-scale TRADE with the United States when this catastrophic 'bloodbath' is over, and I agree."
Furthermore, Trump offered an unexpected perspective on Russia's prospects post-conflict, stating: "There is tremendous opportunity for Russia to create massive amounts of jobs and
wealth. Its potential is UNLIMITED." Article continues below Ukraine is also in line for a trade deal boost, as Trump added: "Likewise, Ukraine can be a great beneficiary on
Trade, in the process of rebuilding its Country." A screengrab of this statement circulated rapidly on X, thanks to President Trump's official account, sparking debates among
users. One observer commented: "Donald Trump desperately wants a Nobel Peace Prize. That's why he keeps trying to force credit for ceasefires - sometimes between India and
Pakistan, and other times by claiming he can stop the Russia-Ukraine war. Always chasing the spotlight, even where it doesn't shine on him." Meanwhile, some voices in the online
community resisted the idea Trump was hunting for accolades, disclosure came that US Representative Darrell Issa named Trump in a Nobel Peace Prize nomination. This proposal made headlines
on March 4, with Issa asserting Trump had "tangibly kickstarted the cause of peace in numerous regions of the world". Article continues below He emphasised: "I hope the
Committee takes note of these extraordinary times and recognizes that President Trump ideally represents what the Nobel Peace Prize should stand for." Having previously been in the
running for the noble laurel, Trump has not yet secured a win. In 2021, a right-wing Norwegian MP proposed Trump for the honour in recognition of his involvement in normalising relations
between Israel and the United Arab Emirates. The 47th President once made a quip about the Nobel Peace Prize, saying: "If I were named Obama, I would have had the Nobel Prize given to
me in 10 seconds."
