ABSTRACT FERTILE or _F_+ strains of _Escherichia coli_ have been defined1,2 as those which are productive of recombinants even when crossed with sterile strains; other strains, _F_−, are defined as those which are productive of recombinants only if crossed with fertile strains. Fertility is transmissible from _F_+ to _F_− cells by ‘infection’ due to an agent (_F_) which is not separable from the cells1,2.
