ABSTRACT THE distribution with age of antibodies against human and animal influenza viruses in man seems to be increasingly important in the interpretation of the epidemiology of influenza _A_. Findings with the recently isolated equine influenza _A_ virus suggest that this virus has been responsible for the influenza epidemics near the beginning of this century1, about 10 yr after the 1889–1890 influenza pandemic, which was probably caused by the influenza _A_2 virus2.
