ABSTRACT GENETIC analysis of _i_ gene mutants which had lost the capacity to bind operator but not inducer suggested that _lac_ repressor binds with its amino terminus to _lac_ operator1.
Here we will show that the carboxy terminus of _lac_ repressor is dispensable: We found fusions between the _i_ (_lac_ repressor) and _z_ (_β_-galactosidase) genes (Fig. 1) which produce
