Access through your institution Buy or subscribe Bariatric surgery is an effective strategy to improve blood-pressure (BP) control in patients who are obese, according to results from the GATEWAY trial presented at the AHA Scientific Sessions 2017. In the nonblinded GATEWAY trial conducted at the Heart Hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil, investigators enrolled 100 patients with a BMI of 30.0–39.9 kg/m2 and hypertension (using two or more antihypertensive drugs at maximum doses or more than two antihypertensive drugs at moderate doses). Patients were randomly assigned to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass plus medical therapy or to medical therapy only. In total, 96% of patients completed follow-up (12 months).
