Kinetics of radical copolymerization between α-methylstyrene and methyl methacrylate

ABSTRACT The theoretical treatment of copolymerization with propagation and depopagation is presented in order to estimate _r_1 _r_2, and _K_11 (the equilibrium constant for propagation and depropagation) in the copolymerization of α-methylstyrene (αMSt: _M_1) and methyl methacrylate (MMA: _M_2). The values of _r_1 _r_2, and _K_11 are found to be 0.48, 0.47, and 5.0, respectively. The termination rate constant in the copolymerization is estimated to be 3.3×107 regardless of monomer feed composition. This means that a φ-factor proposed by Walling is equal to unity.
