When the days get shorter and there's less sunshine during winter, many of us may experience elements of what we colloquially call the 'winter blues'. According to the Royal College of
Psychiatrists, in the UK, about three people in every 100 have significant winter depressions.1 That might not seem like a lot but, when extrapolated across the population, that's over two
million people nationwide. The psychological term is seasonal affective disorder or SAD, and it is a type of depression with all the features of depression, but it happens during the winter
months. The signs and symptoms of SAD are very common and many of us experience some of these symptoms. This may include persistent low mood, anxiety, feeling teary, helpless or hopeless,
and things that normally bring us joy might not bring us that pleasure anymore. That list in not finite; SAD can present in lots of different ways and impacts more people than you might
think.
