nephritis (LN) by promoting γδ T cell infiltration, according to a study by Salomé Pinho and colleagues. Ageing _Mgat5__−/−_ mice, whose kidneys are enriched in mannose structures, developed
a lupus-like syndrome spontaneously. These animals had more kidney γδ T cells than wild-type controls, and non-immune kidney cells expressed higher levels of motifs that could be recognised
by the mouse homologue of DC-SIGN. Tissue explants of _Mgat5__−/−_ mice also released more IL-17a and IFNγ compared with controls, but these effects were abrogated in TCRδ-deficient
_Mgat5__−/−_ mice. This is a preview of subscription content, access via your institution ACCESS OPTIONS Access through your institution Access Nature and 54 other Nature Portfolio journals
