in the world, and shows a high prevalence of cocaine subtypes. Current treatments remain inadequate and have low long-term success rates, highlighting the importance of the social aspect of
SUDs and of public health efforts to prevent them. To provide a better picture of the burden of disease attributable to cocaine, cannabis, amphetamine and opioid SUDs in Latin America, the
authors analyzed data from a longitudinal sample of almost 366 million individuals from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries and Risk Factors Study by sex and location. “These data, when
combined, allow for the calculation of estimated years lived with disability, years of life lost, and disability-adjusted life-years for men and women in each country and facilitate the
assessment of the effects of public policies and changes in substance use behaviors over the last three decades,” João Castaldelli-Maia, first author of the study, explains. This is a
