NanoSIMS (nano-scale Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometer) image representing a cross-section (250 µm in diameter) of a sea anemone tentacle and depicting its cell-specific uptake of nitrogen from blue (no uptake) to purple (maximum uptake). Unicellular dinoflagellates endosymbionts (family Symbiodiniaceae) are found in the inner cell layer of the tentacle and can easily be identified by their purple colour (high nitrogen uptake).
