Staff at university hospitals in Southampton are to appear in a Channel 4 TV series in which surgical operations will be broadcast live to homes across the country. _The Operation: Surgery

Live_ begins on May 25, with the second programme the following day featuring brain surgery while the patient is awake. This will be broadcast live from Southampton General Hospital’s Wessex

Neurological Centre. The operation will be performed by consultant neurosurgeon Paul Grundy and will be beamed to a studio audience at the Wellcome Collection in London, as well as viewers

at home. Krishnan Guru-Murthy will be presenting the week-long series, which will also take in visits to Papworth, Addenbrooke’s and King’s College hospitals for heart, tumour removal and

stomach surgery. Channel 4’s commissioning editor for science David Glover said: ‘We hope the series will de-mystify surgery, encourage discussion and help viewers to understand their own

bodies, as well as showing the care, dedication and skill that goes into modern surgery.’
