The hip-hop aficionado on some of his favorite tunes by Fishbone, A Tribe Called Quest and others Gorillaz kicked off the U.S. leg of their _Humanz_ tour this past weekend in Chicago with a
killer 21-song set packed with tunes from all five of their albums. Special guests Vince Staples, Little Simz, Anthony Hamilton and Hypnotic Brass Ensemble were on hand while Grace Jones and
the late Bobby Womack appeared via video. The most euphoric moment came at the end when Del the Funky Homosapien appeared onstage to deliver his “Clint Eastwood” rap, one of the few times
he’s performed live with the group he collaborated with back in 2001. Not long ago, we spoke with Gorillaz drummer Russel Hobbs about five songs that he loves. Take a listen to them right
here. * LOVE UNLIMITED, “HIGH STEPPIN’, HIP DRESSIN’ FELLA (YOU GOT IT TOGETHER)” This is the song you wanna hear when you’re all pimped up and heading out to the club. For that second you
catch yourself in the hallway mirror, and think, aww yeah, looking damn fine – that facial cleanse really made me sparkle. * A TRIBE CALLED QUEST, “ELECTRIC RELAXATION” The perfect comedown
track. Put the needle on the record, then camp out in your own living room for a stoned soul picnic. Cucumber sandwiches optional. * FISHBONE, “SERVITUDE” Give a monkey a brain and he’ll
swear he’s the center of the universe. True for most apes, but not for Gorillaz. We know what’s really going on. * APHEX TWIN, “LAUGHABLE BUTANE BOB” To me this track is about order from
chaos. It’s almost divine. If I had to be a piece of music software, I’d be the software that created this. * JONNY GUITAR WATSON, “A REAL MOTHER FOR YA” The sleeve shows a pimp in a white
suit riding a go-kart with pram wheels and a Rolls Royce grill. Only the baddest mf in town is gonna pull that off. Respect.
