Shortly before 10:00 p.m. Linda Chavez-Thompson gave a celebratory speech in San Antonio claiming victory in the Lieutenant Governor’s race. While most of the oxygen is being spent this
evening on the gubernatorial race, Democrats were fighting for the state’s second top spot. Chavez-Thompson, surrounded by her grandchildren, supporters and campaign staff accepted her
victory with fighting words. “This is going to be a hard fought race,” she said. “Dewhurst and Perry haven’t paid attention to the education of our children. They’ve written off a generation
and cheated us and cheated our children out of a future.” Chavez-Thompson, a former union leader, acknowledged that it will be tough raising the money to run a statewide campaign against
Republican incumbent David Dewhurst. Dewhurst has a personal fortune of more than $200 million and sizeable campaign contributions. “Dewhurst has the millions but I have the truth on my
side,” she told her supporters. “I’m going to need your help.”
