In a major step forward for the field of optical communications technology, an international team at the University of Sydney has managed to observe soliton compression in a silicon


photonics chip for the first time. Solitons are waves that travel through a medium without changing shape — not unlike a ship-sinking rogue ocean wave in miniature. Greater understanding of


these oscillations has already played an important role in the development of long-haul telecommunications, but until now their compression had never been witnessed in silicon. Read more at
