Disney will begin constructing Star Wars-themed parks in California and Florida in 2016, Walt Disney COO Thomas Staggs announced without confirming an opening date.

The plan includes an experience where fans are dropped into a rebel battle. The parks will also have a ride where visitors get to control the Millennium Falcon.

We are creating a jaw-dropping new world that represents our largest single themed land expansion ever. These new lands at Disneyland and Walt Disney World will transport guests to a whole

new Star Wars planet, including an epic Star Wars adventure that puts you in the middle of a climactic battle between the First Order and the Resistance.– Bob Iger, CEO, Disney

Iger also confirmed that the lands will contain characters from the original Star Wars movies alongside those from the upcoming The Force Awakens.

The next film in the franchise The Force Awakens will be released in UK cinemas on December 17.
