People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has asked that a man awaiting trial for cannibalism be forced to become vegetarian. Christopher McCuin, 25, was arrested and charged earlier this
month with killing, cooking, and partially eating his girlfriend. Now a letter from PETA Vice President Bruce Friedrich to prison officials asks that he be prevented from “contributing to
any more suffering and death by placing him on a healthy, humane vegetarian diet.” The request will not be honored, prison officials say, and McCuin will “be fed like everyone else.” A man
who tried to jump off the Empire State Building with a parachute is suing the building’s owners for $12 million, claiming they defamed him. Jeb Corliss, 31, was planning to parachute from
the skyscraper’s observation deck in 2006 but was tackled and restrained by security guards. Corliss was charged with reckless endangerment, but the charge was dismissed, and now Corliss
says he was defamed because there is no law against jumping off a skyscraper. “They say he acted illegally,” said Corliss’ lawyer, Mark Heller. “He did not, and it was defamation for them to
allege that he did.” A free daily email with the biggest news stories of the day – and the best features from TheWeek.com SUBSCRIBE TO THE WEEK Escape your echo chamber. Get the facts
