Authorities sought Monday to determine who fired a gun from inside a vehicle on a Chollas View-area roadway — causing no known injuries — as California Highway Patrol officers were nearby,
investigating a fatal freeway wreck. The deadly crash occurred about 12:12 a.m. Sunday, when a 26-year-old Chula Vista man lost control of the Toyota Tacoma he was driving on a transition
ramp from northbound Interstate 805 to state Route 94, according to the California Highway Patrol. The pickup truck veered off the roadway and struck a guardrail and a concrete barrier, CHP
public affairs Officer Salvador Castro said. The driver, whose name was withheld pending family notification, died at the scene of the accident. As CHP personnel were investigating the
crash, they heard gunshots that appeared to have been discharged from inside another pickup truck on the Market Street bridge over Interstate 805, the CHP reported. Following the gunfire,
the unidentified driver of the white vehicle sped off to the east. “It is unknown if the gunfire was directed at officers,” Castro said. “San Diego police officers responded and checked the
area for suspects. CHP officers responded to the intersection (where the shooting took place) and located a handgun (bullet) casing.” The fatal crash and the gunfire remained under
investigation Monday, Castro said. _Updated at 7:02 p.m., April 25, 2022_ _–City News Service_
