The 2025 National Veterans Golden Age Games will bring together Veterans from across the country, and this year, one of Ohio’s own will carry the state flag with pride. Shannon Davis, an

Army Veteran from Northeast Ohio, has been selected to represent the state at the games, which began May 30 and end June 5, Known for her kindness and community spirit, Davis has long been a

familiar face at the Buckeye Wheelchair Games, often showing up just to lend a hand. “She has a heart of gold,” said Patricia Whitecotton, a VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System recreational

therapist. “She’s volunteered without hesitation and always steps in where she’s needed. She’s active in her church, curious about new experiences and genuinely cares about others.” Only

three Veterans from the Northeast Ohio system were chosen this year and for Davis, it’s more than an honor. While she’s never qualified for many competitions due to not having an adaptive

disability, her dedication and spirit never went unnoticed. “I am so excited, pumped and overly enthusiastic about finally participating in the games,” said Davis, who will participate in

table tennis, pickleball, cornhole and a free throw competition. “I look forward to leading the parade and representing Ohio.” Davis credits Whitecotton and VANEOHS for helping her

participate in the games and for providing her with exceptional healthcare. “Ms. Patty has been more than a rec therapist; she is someone I can just come and talk to when I’m having a bad

day,” Davis said. “Years ago, VA was looked at as a place that had nothing…somewhere you’d go in your last days but that is not true. VA has everything you can think of, and the care is

specialized to Veterans. Other medical facilities in the community just don’t understand us Veterans the same way.” Now, only a few days after carrying the Ohio flag at the national games,

Davis stands as a symbol of service, resilience and quiet strength. “For anyone who is debating on coming to the VA, you have to come check it out for yourself,” she said. “There is a

different type of love at the VA. Especially the VA Annex for women. The VA in my opinion is the best and has so much to offer Veterans.”  For more information on the National Veterans
