Dr. Arthur Evensen, a podiatric surgical resident at the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System (SAVAHCS), was awarded the VA Outstanding Employee award by the Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame

Society (AVHOFS). This recognition is a testament to Dr. Evensen’s unwavering commitment to supporting and advocating for the Veterans he serves. Dr. Evensen's dedication to shaping the

future of Veteran healthcare is demonstrated through his clinical research and compassionate care. His efforts have not only impacted the lives of countless Veterans but have also set a

high standard for healthcare professionals within the VA system. "I came here as a student back in 2021," Dr. Evensen reflected. "When I was looking at places to go for

residency and training, I went to hospitals all over the country. But it was my transformative experience at the VA in Salt Lake City, coinciding with my father-in-law's passing and

honor walk, that solidified my decision to do my residency at the VA. This recognition is especially meaningful, as I’m the first podiatrist, first resident, and first individual from

SAVAHCS to receive this award." AVHOFS expressed their gratitude for Dr. Evensen and dedicated VA staff, noting the essential role they play in enhancing the quality of life for

Veterans. Dr. James Dancho, Director of Podiatric Surgery at SAVAHCS, shared his thoughts on Dr. Evansen's award. "Dr. Evensen is absolutely the best choice by the Arizona Veterans

Hall of Fame Society. He has been a valuable addition to our residency program and a remarkable example for other residents. As a Veteran myself, I understand Dr. Evensen's compassion

and dedication to Veteran care. This award could not have gone to someone more deserving." In a special ceremony at SAVAHCS, Dr. Evensen was presented with a Director's Coin by

Jennifer Gutowski, the SAVAHCS Director, recognizing his outstanding achievement. "This VA has provided incredible opportunities," Dr. Evensen said. "We have some amazing

surgeons and mentors here. I've had the opportunity to do significant research, work in limb salvage, and share intimate moments with Veterans, which have all changed me as a

person." The Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame Society (AVHOFS) was formed in 2007 to focus on supporting Arizona Veterans. The mission of the Society is to preserve and perpetuate the

traditions of the American military and all who served in it, undertake charitable and other projects at the state and local levels, and work with Veteran service organizations. In 2023, the

AVHOFS initiated a program to recognize an outstanding VA employee at each of the three VA Medical Centers in Arizona annually. This award aims to honor employees who demonstrate the VA’s

ICARE values and show outstanding support and advocacy for the Veterans they serve. When asked about his residency and service to Veterans, Dr. Evensen shared, "My residency at SAVAHCS

has provided me with invaluable experiences and the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who have served our country. Each day, I am inspired by their stories

and their resilience."
