Darcy announced amendments to the Mental Health Act that allow officials to take people 18 and under, if they have a “life-threatening” overdose, into “short-term involuntary emergency

stabilization” inside hospitals with psychiatric or observation units. These young people will be kept for between two and seven days, until they have a discharge plan that could involve

psychologists, Indigenous elders, and help for their substance use.
