If you're arrested for a crime in North Carolina, there's a good chance you'll have to give up your DNA whether or not you're guilty. A new state law takes effect Tuesday
(Feb. 1) that allows law enforcement authorities to swab the inside of the cheeks of people arrested on most felony and some misdemeanor charges. The (Raleigh) News & Observer has a
story here. The State Bureau of Investigation will send the DNA results to state and national databases to see if they show up in other cases. "Taking DNA samples from arrestees will
help prevent crimes, clear unsolved cases, and bring justice to victims," Attorney General Roy Cooper says in a press release. The N&O report says that courts have upheld the
practice, equating it to taking fingerprints arrestees are booked.
