If I said the words street food, you'd probably think of a hot place like Thailand or Turkey where you can get a mountain of local food and a drink for about 50p. And in our country of
stodgy greasy traditional pub food, it's hard to imagine how that translates to something you can buy from a street corner. In the centre of Coventry, there's a small kiosk on
Hertford Street that tries to marry those two culinary worlds. A place where you can get something quintessentially English as a snack to enjoy in the sun. Porky's, which calls itself
'The Pork of the Town', has all the usual burgers, bacon butties, and hot dogs you can find at any standard kiosk in any British town or A-road layby. READ MORE: I WENT TO
COVENTRY’S POSH DESSERT SHOP AND BROKE MY OWN RULES But, it was the pork and stuffing roll that grabbed my attention. Combined with the large cuts of pork on display with their crackling
enticing me in, I had to find out if this place really was all pork and no trousers. Granted, given our damp rainy island on the edge of Europe isn't accustomed to the 28C heat that was
prevailing, it provided an extra challenge of trying to wolf down a large dollop of carbohydrates and protein. Nonetheless, I gave it a go, with a can of Fanta at the ready to cool me down.
As I ordered, a gentleman who was chatting to the man behind the counter asked if I was going for the sweet chilli sauce. I felt like I'd be judged heavily if I didn't and thank
goodness I gave into peer-pressure; it tasted delicious. The bun was soft, the pork was not dry nor did it taste like cardboard, and the sweet chili sauce added just enough of a flavour hit
to complement the whole package without blowing my head off. Knowing now that it's right outside the HMV Empire, I'd happily have one before heading in to dance the night away. We
tend to talk our food down a lot in the UK, in part because there's a global stereotype about our food being rubbish. I strongly disagree and this is a hill I will die on. Sausage and
mash, sausage rolls, toad in the hole, Sunday roasts, and all the different pies are the sorts of pub meals I can't get enough of. To know that I can get a variation of that in the palm
of my hand within a matter of minutes for the humble price of £5, including a drink, will definitely have me coming back. And for those who need to keep things Halal or Kosher, there is a
pulled chicken option as well. GET DAILY HEADLINES AND BREAKING NEWS EMAILED TO YOU - IT’S FREE
