purchases. The arrested accused have been idenified as Kishorbhai Naiyya and Hemant Jain. According to assistant superintendent of police (ASP) of Bhayander division, Atul Kulkarni,


information was received that a gang involved in cloning debit card data from ATM machines is operating in the Mira-Bhayander area. "A lot of victims had approached banks saying money


was being siphoned from their accounts. We analysed the CCTV footage from the ATM machines where the skimming had allegedly taken place and used that to zero in on the suspects. On receipt


of specific information, we apprehended Naiyaa and Jain from Bhayander (East) on Sunday. From their possession, we found eight debit cards, one skimmer device and three mobile phones. We


also seized a laptop, more skimmers, micro grinder machines, magnetic strips, swipe machines and cards of various banks from them later," said ASP Kulkarni. During questionin, the duo


admitted having stolen data, and said two other associates of theirs — Firoz and Jeetu — were also involved. The latter duo is still at large. "Once they cloned the cards, they made


withdrawals from ATMs in other states," he added. WHAT IS SKIMMING * Customer data from the debit card which is used at ATM machines is taken. * A camera will record customer’s PIN


number or a duplicate keypad will be affixed to the machine. * Data taken out will be passed to counterparts who are abroad. * Duplicate or cloned cards will be used to withdraw money


PRECAUTIONS * Examine the keypad: Does it look different, or thicker? * Check for cameras: Consider where the fraudsters may have hidden cameras.
