McCoull, wins the Benchmark 64 Handicap at Mowbray on Wednesday night at his third start after a 10-month break. Longford trainer Bill Ryan's decision to ignore advice to retire Sentimental

Dream was rewarded when the lightly-raced seven-year-old won his sixth race at Mowbray on Wednesday night.

swooped on the leaders rounding the home turn and Sentimental Dream quickly took control of the Benchmark 64 Handicap.

He went on to score by a length from by Son Of Faith with Heaven's Delight a similar margin away third.

Ryan said that Sentimental Dream had battled issues throughout his career - hence he's had only 24 starts - and when he also developed a suspensory problem 10 months ago a vet recommended he

be retired.

"But I didn't take any notice of her - I thought that, if we gave him a decent break, hopefully it would heal and we could bring him back," the trainer said.

"The suspensory problem wasn't that bad but if I'd kept going with him he'd have blown it."

Ryan said he knew he had the Telesto gelding back on track after his second-up sixth to Somerset on Launceston Cup day.

"He burst through and looked like he was going to win but just peaked on his run," the trainer said.

"I thought he was a good thing tonight, so I had already nominated him for the Benchmark 72 next week.

"There's not many more meetings coming up at Mowbray so we have to make the most of them."

Ryan's luck wasn't all good. He was disappointed that his filly Still A Star, a winner of two recent trials, was withdrawn from the 2YO Maiden.

"She played up in the truck, banged her head and took a bit of bark off a hind leg," he explained.

"It wasn't serious but the new rule is that if they bang their head they have to be scratched."

WELL-RELATED COLT BOLTS IN Two-year-old colt Fitzwilliam lived up to his good breeding with a runaway 10-length win at his fourth racetrack appearance.

Fitzwilliam's grand-dam is the Melbourne city winner Kats Clause who has produced top gallopers Mister Songman and Mister John.

Trainer Stuart Gandy believes Fitzwilliam is also destined for bigger things.

"He's always been immature and probably felt the firmer tracks early on so we've been patient with him and he's repaid us tonight," Gandy said.

"I don't want to put any pressure on him because, on breeding, he'll be better with time and I think he could be a really nice horse."

The John Blacker-trained Blaze Forth upset a confident plunge on Life On The Wire ($4.20 to $2.25) when he finished strongly to win the $20,000 Open Handicap.

Earlier in the night, Life On The Wire's stablemate I Remember You narrowly won the $50,000 Benchmark 78 at Sandown.
