The legendary opthalmist, who invented eye surgery using laser technology, is ready to raise the bar again as he looks to bring femtosecond lasers to the masses, a new way of treating
cataracts. The new laser therapy uses focused beams of light that targets the film of a cataract without the need to cut, which can cause complications during the healing process. The Ultra
short beams are precise enough to avoid damaging healthy material and have been proven to offer a safer option to existing practices. And speaking to _CNN_, Dr. Josef Bille revealed the full
extent of how the treatment can be used to change the world. "There shouldn't be any blind person ten years from now in the world," he said. "It's a treatment which
can make every eye perfect. "We call it perfect vision, it is twice as good as normal vision, so you see twice as fine detail at much better contrast... Five times better contrast
vision at dim lighting conditions, rain or in foggy areas." Procedures are still far from cost effective however, with just a handful of units currently in use costing over £250,000.
Dr. Josef Bille's original treatment for repairing cornea damage using lasers has corrected near-sightedness, far-sightedness, and astigmatism in millions of patients worldwide.
