Shocking footage captured seconds after the sinkhole swallowed the vehicle shows witnesses’ heroic efforts to rescue the trapped family - including a two-year-old girl. The car is seen
standing vertically after toppling into the five-metre wide crater with the terrified passengers screaming for help. Incredibly Edgar Orlanda Bartolo Silva, 34, Marisol Mercedes Gutierrez
Siccha, 31, and their toddler all escaped unharmed. Rescue teams used a crane to haul the car out of the sinkhole, which is believed to have been the result of local downpours and flooding.
The family were taken to hospital as a precaution after the incident in Trujillo, Peru, on Thursday. The UK has suffered a spate of sinkholes in the past few years, with craters opening up
on motorways and residential streets. Sinkholes - which can be just a few feet wide or large enough to swallow entire buildings - are usually caused by erosion and the drainage of water.
The deepest ever sinkhole was 217ft (662m) in China.
