ABSTRACT ON the afternoon of Aug. 31 I was at Portofino watching across the bay a succession of heavy thunderstorms that drove up from the south over the Ligurian hills east of Rapallo. At
about 3.30 P.M. a rain-curtain a couple of miles wide was moving northwards, completely obscuring a section of the coast-line. While this was opposite Chiavari two appearances of ‘ball
