ABSTRACT A THEORY that in an oil hydrosol the globules tend to reach a stable size, at which there is a balance between electrical and capillary forces, was advanced by Lewis1 and extended by Knapp2 for solid particles. For a particle surrounded by an electrical double layer, Knapp derived the equation where _r__c_ is the 'critical' radius at which the solubility of the particle is equal to that of a plane surface of the same material, _e_ is the electric charge on the particle, δ the thickness of the double layer (assumed to be small compared with _r__c_), ε the dielectric constant of the medium and γ the interfacial tension between particle and medium.
