ABSTRACT IT has been shown that the free —SH content of nerve tissue increases under the influence of stimulation. This suggested the possibility that the number of titratable —SH groups may be directly or indirectly related to the ratio of potassium to sodium ions in the cell and consequently to its surface potential1,2.
