ABSTRACT THE effect of paramagnetic ions on proton relaxation times depends not only on their concentration but also on the binding of the ion to other molecules which may be present in the same solution. By measuring longitudinal relaxation times (_T_1) by nuclear magnetic resonance we have compared the proton relaxation-rates at constant ion concentration with and without deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) present. In this way it was possible to detect binding and to distinguish between interior and exterior DNA binding sites for different transition metal ions.
