Access through your institution Buy or subscribe Primary care NHS dentistry is almost unique in allowing clinicians working in a publicly funded service to offer private treatment within the same course of treatment as NHS treatment, on the same day and, in England and Wales, on the same tooth. Under the current NHS General Dental Services contract (2006) a dentist is required to provide all 'proper and necessary dental care and treatment which the patient is willing to undergo' and includes everything that is necessary to secure the patient's oral health.
