1. CLASH OVER RAM NAVAMI PROCESSION IN WEST BURDWAN A clash broke out between two groups over a Ram Navami procession in a town in West Burdwan on Monday afternoon, bringing to the fore the

risks associated with events in which weapons are brandished. The situation was brought under control after police rushed to the spot in Barakar town on the Bengal-Jharkhand border. Barakar

is around 30km from Asansol. Section 144 of the CrPC, which prevents unlawful assembly, has been imposed and all Ram Navami processions stopped in Barakar. Central forces have been deployed.

commissioner Rajeev Kumar’s claim that allegations of “destruction of evidence” in the Saradha scam were “mala fide” and part of a “larger conspiracy” hatched by former CBI director

Nageswara Rao and BJP leaders Kailash Vijayvargiya and Mukul Roy. A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi is expected to take up for hearing the matter on 22 April. The court

was dealing with a contempt application filed by the CBI, alleging that Kumar who was part of the Special Investigation Team that had initially probed the Saradha scam was not co-operating

with the central agency and tampered with call data records of several key suspects. (Source: _The Telegraph)_ 3. BJP & ALLIES HOLD GORKHA ‘UNITY’ RALLY IN DARJEELING The BJP paraded

representatives of at least seven political and apolitical outfits at a rally in Chowrasta here and used the gathering to claim that the Gorkhas were united behind the saffron camp even as

Opposition parties called it a gimmick ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. Over 16 lakh people are expected to vote to elect a new Darjeeling MP on Thursday. Around 7 lakh voters belong to

Darjeeling, Kurseong and Kalimpong — three Assembly segments in the hills. “This is a ‘Gorkha Unity Vijay Mahajulis’. This was planned to show the unity among the Gorkhas,” said Ajoy

Edwards, a steering committee member of the GNLF, calling the programme a “victory celebration”. (Source: _The Telegraph__)_ 4. TMC SEEKS REMOVAL OF ‘PARTISAN’ BALURGHAT SP In a first,

Trinamool councillors of Balurghat municipality on Sunday mobbed the office of the Balurghat superintendent of police, demanding the SP’s resignation. TMC leaders alleged that SP N Tripathi

was playing a partisan role. Balurghat goes to polls in the third phase, on 23 April. This is the first complaint from members of the ruling party against a superintendent of police, when

such complaints keep coming from BJP. “The superintendent of police is taking sides. He is not taking any action against BJP workers despite our submitting evidence against the accused.

Instead, our workers are being harassed and arrested on flimsy charges. We want the immediate removal of the SP,” said Trinamool district working president Debashis Majumder. (Source: _The

that has never had an MP from Trinamool. Lashing out at four-time MP Adhir Chowdhury, Banerjee said the Congress leader has sold his soul to BJP and CPM. Urging voters in this

Muslim-dominated district not to waste their votes on Congress, she said: “A vote to Congress or CPM will only strengthen BJP. RSS pracharaks have reached with bags full of money.” “Congress

leaders here have sold their souls to BJP and CPM. The Congress leader from Behrampore (Adhir Chowdhury) talks to BJP/RSS leaders in the morning, moves as a Congressman during noontime and

is in touch with CPM in the evening. RSS people are campaigning for him in Behrampore and also in Jangipur for the Congress candidate (Abhijit Mukherjee) whose father Pranab Mukherjee had

been to the RSS headquarters,” the CM said. (Source: _The Times Of India__)_ 6. MIMI CHAKRABORTY'S HOMECOMING FOR TMC Actress Mimi Chakraborty touched down at her old town on Monday to

bus at Tegharia on VIP Road on Monday morning, seconds after the vehicle in which she was travelling forced her to get off in the middle of the road. Beliaghata resident Sudipta Chakraborty

was heading to work when the accident, which disfigured her body so much that she could be identified only by her documents, took place a little after 9.45am. The bus in which Chakraborty

was travelling was plying on the airport-bound flank of VIP Road. A few metres before the Tegharia traffic signal and the pedestrian crossover, the vehicle slowed down and asked the

passengers to get off. Though there is a designated bus bay there, police said, buses tend to keep to the right to stop others from picking up passengers. In doing so, they force commuters

to get off in the middle of the road. (Source: _The Times Of India__)_ Published: 16 Apr 2019, 7:50 AM IST
