Temperatures dropped to record lows in 13 states from the Great Lakes to the Gulf Coast as cold air flowed from Canada. A 113-year-old record fell in Chicago, which had a low reading of 24
degrees, 5 below the 1873 mark. Duluth, Minn., had a record a low of 18 degrees. Eau Claire, Wis., had a record low of 19 and Marquette, Mich., bottomed out at 14 degrees, another new record
for the date. Records also were set in the Gulf states, where frost or freeze warnings were issued. Record low temperatures also were registered at Birmingham, Ala., 36 degrees; Lake
