ABSTRACT The molecular basis of the changes in membrane permeability that underlie the nerve impulse can be studied by statistical analysis of the random fluctuations in current through the nerve membrane. Such “noise analysis” has already begun to clarify the nature of the gating mechanisms that control the flow of ions across the membrane at the neuromuscular junction.
